Cal Poly Students Can Enjoy Food Products Created By Other Students.

When committing to a school with an agriculture program and a “Learn by Doing” tagline, many students don’t know what it entails. According to Niche.com, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Science (CAFES), is in the top 20 best agricultural schools in the nation. Students get to work hands-on with animals such as the campus cows to prepare them for the agricultural field (pun intended).

So what does this mean for the people of Cal Poly? An abundance of food made on campus!

The Cal Poly Creamery states that Cal Poly products are considered “farmstead’, meaning they are produced on site from the milk of our own cows.” Even with the Coronavirus, the Creamery has found ways to provide ice cream to our students through a dairy drive through on Fridays.

In addition to dairy, Cal Poly also offers meat for students to purchase. Cal Poly Meats is staffed by students who learn about the meat process through specific classes taken on campus. Some of these classes include: ASCI 211: Meat Science, ASCI 415: HACCP for Meat and Poultry Operations, and ASCI 484: Processed Meat Products.

Of course, you can’t walk away with just meat, your meal needs a little bit of flavor! Cal Poly also sells rubs and barbecue sauce to add some spice to your snacks. If the added flavor isn’t enough, the sauces have been reformulated by students to be healthier. The CP Food Science website explains that “a group of students reformulated the sauces to meet market demands by eliminating high fructose corn syrup and xanthan gum from the formulation.”

Both parents and students have been enjoying these student made products for years. Shannon Sullivan, the parent of a current freshman, loves when her kid comes home with new products.

“Our whole family gets excited when she comes home with different products and flavors for us to try,” stated Sullivan. “I sent her with a cooler this quarter so she can bring it all home safely.”

All Cal Poly products can currently be purchased at the Campus Market, a small market in the heart of Cal Poly’s campus and online.
